We RUINED Our TEAK! | SailAway 274

This week on SailAway, a looming eyesore of a project that has been a malignant presence since day one is finally being dealt with. Isn’t that what you’d love to look out through every morning? Like do doors? Oh good boy.

But the damage is bad, and the repair process becomes far more complex than expected, with steps and missteps along the way. In true SailAway style, we tackle each one at a time until this gorilla is finally off our back, like it’s going to take just one good whack.

The Ongoing Project

We’ve had a long project list for Ophelia since we bought her, and we’ve been working our way through them for almost 2 years now. And we’re about to kick off the biggest one yet – converting our motors to electric. But there’s one soul-sucking project that’s been driving me crazy from day one.

The Scope of the Problem

The difficulty is this piece of trim, which is a special piece. It’s not something you can just go buy at the hardware store or whatever. So I’ve got to do everything I can to get it off of there in one piece because this isn’t just something that I can replace without issue.

So it’s kind of a tedious process to get it out of there, but putting in the glass theoretically will be a whole lot easier. Damn it, what’s going to happen? But we persist, making our way through each step.

The Reveal

After all the hard work, the finished doors look fantastic. They’re a major improvement and no longer that looming eyesore. Baby steps, but this was no baby step; it was quite the project.

This renovation journey continues as we move forward with converting our motors to electric. And while each step is its own challenge, it’s incredibly satisfying to see these improvements come together on Ophelia.

And it was AWESOME. VARNISHED TEAK - you either LOVE it or HATE it. Or like us, life's just too busy to spend DAYS refinishing it every year. We've FINALLY gotten around to dealing with the MASSIVE and UGLY deteriorated doors to our salon. But is even possible to save them? Do we even want to? Does making an old boat beautiful again necessarily mean restoring it to original? Which ever way we go, they'll never be the same again! Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY SUNDAY! Cheers!!
