Upgrading Our Boat’s Solar Panels for a Power Boost

In this episode of SailAway World Sailing, we take the first step in our journey towards massive solar energy with an essential upgrade: increasing the number of solar panels on our boat. While our current setup is functional and well-constructed using aluminum for its tilting feature to maximize sun exposure, we recognized that by simply adding one more panel, we could almost triple our solar power output. This upgrade is not only about increasing efficiency but also enhancing our living experience aboard by providing better protection from the sun’s harsh rays in the evening. The Aluminum Frame: A Solid Foundation for GrowthOne of the key advantages we have is our existing aluminum frame, which not only supports three solar panels but also shows great potential to accommodate an additional one without needing expensive stainless steel solutions. This frame’s strength and capacity are crucial in keeping costs down while ensuring a stable base for more solar panels. The Extension Process: From Measurements to InstallationWith the metal and necessary hardware in hand, the task at hand was to measure, attach extension pieces to our arms just enough for that extra width. The goal was to synchronize this process perfectly with some light wind forecasted to facilitate easier installation of the new panels without straining too much on the boat’s resources.Day of Installation: From Extension to Finalizing with Four PanelsThe installation day arrived with calm winds, ideal for executing the plan. With our new extension pieces securely in place, we ventured out to pick up four brand-new 310-watt solar panels from Budget Solar. The upgrade from three to four solar panels was completed with precision and efficiency.Transforming the Interior Space with Vinyl UpholsteryWhile the external solar panel upgrade significantly boosted our boat’s power, we also wanted to make living aboard more comfortable and visually appealing. The arrival of our foam-backed vinyl fabric inspired a DIY project to cover the old, textured fiberglass walls in our bedroom with something more aesthetically pleasing and easier to maintain.Challenges and Solutions: From Unforeseen Delays to Final ResultsHowever, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Unexpected stock takes at local businesses delayed our acquisition of necessary materials, requiring us to adapt by exploring alternative solutions such as purchasing from West Tech if open. Despite these setbacks, the transformation yielded excellent results with a newfound love for our upgraded living quarters.Final Thoughts: The Path ForwardWith the solar power and interior upgrades successfully completed, we’ve taken a significant step forward in enhancing both our boat’s efficiency and livability. Moving forward, we’re excited to tackle more projects on SailAway while continuously seeking ways to make our boating experience as comfortable and eco-friendly as possible.Join Us for More AdventuresStay tuned for more updates on our solar panel journey, plus a plethora of other projects and adventures aboard SailAway. Adding over 1200 WATTS of SOLAR on our stern is STEP ONE in our ultimate project of CONVERTING TO ELECTRIC MOTORS. This will also be a HUGE advantage for our life at anchor, meaning FAR less generator usage and no more panic should our genny have any issues. First step...play monkey on our current stern array in prep for the bigger panels! Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY SUNDAY! Cheers!!
