St. Martin Lagoon Entry, E-Scooter Grocery Test, and Women’s 5K Run

SailAway recently spent time settling into St. Martin, but now it’s time to get down to business. We moved the catamaran into an Anchorage once before on this trip and into a different bay once or twice. But today marks our first venture inside the Lagoon on the Dutch side, as that has been the next big challenge. Being just under 15m long places us within their $21 bracket for weekly harbor fees, which gives us the ticket in.

We had all of our ducks in a row to prepare for this process. Shades down, dinghy and mat up, motor and boat all systems go. Checking out everything beforehand ensured that we were set up properly for the big entry. Checking in on the radio is at 11:15AM and typically there are quite a few mega yachts waiting as well to enter. Not many were planning to go through this time around so we might just have it fairly quiet while making our way into the Lagoon.

Moving the catamaran is often riddled with some anxiety for both Lauren and I, but especially for her. We’re over playing it a little bit, because we’ve moved plenty of Point B’s from our original A. However, movement in itself tends to cause some anxiety. Particularly tight maneuvers like this were we navigate through the drawbridge make her nervous.

To make matters even more interesting on this day, we planned on picking up an e-scooter immediately following the boat entry and parking process for a review. High Boy scooters had arrived to St. Martin and we could not wait to test one out for ourselves in addition to doing our weekly grocery shopping with it.

After successfully maneuvering through the tight drawbridge entrance, making it into the Lagoon felt incredibly validating for our small catamaran team. Our journey through had some unexpected hurdles like needing internet access to download an app for a scooter we were picking up – that also did not exist at the time. But once everything came together perfectly, we were more than excited.

We got the high Boy scooter unboxed and set up, and after waiting for the necessary online app access for location information, we hit the road! It took a lot of effort and weight to see how capable our new e-scooter truly was for a grocery shopping test. With around 45-65 pounds of groceries, it handled well on our first run with just myself riding it. We were eager to see how Lauren would fair running errands solo as well.

In an effort to continue physical fitness while in St. Martin, Lauren loves seeking out Cool Runs like the all ladies 5k Rivers event we found. This particular one ended up being more of a challenge when we realized there was another couple’s boat on the docks, who also had a wife running and husband taking care of the boat needs like dropping off the bikes for their lady to run. We happily accepted their offer of an additional spot to join their supportive team!

It truly feels great to get in those workouts while exploring new areas around St. Martin. With grocery shopping made a bit easier on our e-scooter and joining some incredible running events, we’re finding all sorts of ways to enjoy our time in this beautiful island paradise.

SAILBOAT LIFE comes with tons of REAL LIFE ISSUES. One of the BIGGEST is simply GETTING from A to B on whatever ISLAND or CITY we're visiting. There's only so much that's walking distance from the anchorage or even marina. This sometimes means just getting groceries is a HUGE OREAL. Even on a BIG CRUISING CATAMARAN, there's only so much space for large items. We've tried folding bikes and even an eBike...both were simply too big and difficult to take back and forth on the dinghy. But we MAY have discovered the perfect solution to this problem. Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY SUNDAY! Cheers!!
