Sail Life – New ‘oh $%#! something is wrong’ Tool Bag

Welcome back aboard Good Old Athena for yet more DIY adventures! With the search for a new 50 to 60 ft project boat ramping up, now’s the perfect time to get our tools under control. Introducing the new Sailrite tool bag – here’s an honest review of its functionality and my journey to assemble it.

What Inspired This Project?

I’ve been using this trusty old bag for quite some time, but it’s finally starting to fall apart. Enter stage left, the Sailrite Ultrafeed and our new friend Mr 3D Printer! This tool organization project was long overdue.

The Journey with Sailrite Kits

While scouring the internet for inspiration, I came across two kits from Sailrite that caught my attention. The first was their tool roll with zippered pouches, which looked like it could significantly improve my current toolbox situation. Simultaneously, I discovered their utility tote kit and thought it would be a fun way to learn some new sewing skills.

The ‘oh $%#! something is wrong’ Moment

To aid in the sewing process, I came up with a quick and creative solution: design a magnetic sewing guide using my 3D printer. A little Fusion 360 magic, and we had ourselves an effective, makeshift sewing tool!

Assembling the Sailrite Tool Bag

The process of putting together the kit was an educational experience, and I learned a new technique from Sailright’s video tutorials – Myer corners. The bag turned out to be quite magnificent, making it easy to keep tools well-organized on board Athena.

Thread Issues with the Sewing Machine

During the assembly process, I encountered a frustrating issue involving thread. While using the Sailrite-supplied thread, my sewing machine malfunctioned, resulting in inconsistent stitches that needed constant adjustment.

Solving the Puzzle

With persistence and some helpful tips from Sailrite’s customer support, I was able to resolve this issue by using a different thread that provided better results. The magnetic sewing guide had no problems, performing flawlessly as expected.

The Result

Overall, I am quite pleased with the finished Sailrite tool bag and have high hopes for future custom modifications. With four compartments, the organization of my tools is more effective than before, but it’s not without challenges!

What’s Next?

I’m planning on organizing additional tools in the other utility tote kit and perhaps creating a modified version of this tool bag with added features for future projects. A trip to extend my Visa, prepare for electrical certifications, and tackle boat maintenance awaits – stay tuned!

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering the Sailrite tool bag or utility tote kit for your own projects, I highly recommend giving it a shot. The opportunity to learn new skills and improve organization is invaluable – just be prepared for unexpected challenges along the way!
