Sail Life – ABYC Marine Electrical Certification ✔️
In this week’s video, we delve into the exciting journey of pursuing and hopefully obtaining our ABYC (American Boat and Yachting Council) marine electrical certification. As avid boaters and cruisers on Athena, Ava and Mess have embarked on a mission to not only ensure their boat is safe but also to expand their knowledge and skills in the realm of maritime electrical systems. Why the ABYC Marine Electrical Certification? For those unfamiliar with the ABYC, it’s a non-profit organization that sets standards for the safe construction and maintenance of boats. The ABYC standard is a comprehensive document covering various aspects of boat safety, including electrical systems. Pursuing this certification allows Ava and Mess to confidently work on their own boat’s electrical systems while also preparing them for future boating adventures. A Glimpse into the Certification Process The process involves enrolling in a 3-week online course, attending daily Zoom sessions that last around an hour and a half to two hours, and then taking a 204-question exam. While challenging, both Ava and Mess are determined to not only pass the certification but also gain a deeper understanding of maritime electrical systems. The Study Guide and Course Experience A key element in their preparation is the study guide, which they find concise, easy to understand, filled with pictures, and good examples. The course instructor, Mike Teraria, does an excellent job of explaining data-packed slides while incorporating real-world examples and humor. Practical Applications and Personal Reasons for Pursuing the Certification Pursuing this certification isn’t just about gaining a credential; it’s also about preparing their boat, Athena, for future challenges and potentially opening up new opportunities such as starting a side hustle in marine electrical work. The Exam and Passing With Flying Colors Ava and Mess share their experiences, from studying using annotated tabs in the study guide to finally taking the online exam. Despite some minor disruptions, they successfully pass the exam with high scores, demonstrating their commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. The Road Ahead – Puerto Rico and Beyond With the certification achieved, Ava and Mess look forward to continuing their boating journey, with stops at places like Walmart and Costco in Puerto Rico before heading towards the Bahamas. Their adventure is not just about crossing off locations on a map but also about learning and growing together. Reflections and Inviting Viewer Engagement As the video concludes, Ava and Mess invite their viewers to share their own thoughts, experiences, and ask questions. Their openness highlights a shared interest in maritime life, emphasizing that boating is as much about the journey as it is about reaching destinations. Conclusion The pursuit of ABYC marine electrical certification represents more than just a technical achievement for Ava and Mess. It’s an opportunity to enhance the safety, functionality, and potential resale value of their beloved boat, Athena, while also fostering personal growth and camaraderie. Their journey not only enlightens viewers about the importance of such certifications but also inspires others to embrace lifelong learning in the realm of boating. For more information about the ABYC: https://abycinc.org/
