Hull Turning Wheels Coming Together – Ep. 393 RAN Sailing

In this exciting episode of RAN Sailing, Molina Yuan and the family continue their remarkable journey of building a new boat from scratch on Sun Hill Farm. After months of preparation, they’re ready to tackle their biggest operation yet – turning the hull over. With determination and skill, Molina and the team are close to completing the hull turning wheels, which will be crucial for this ambitious endeavor.

Turning the Hull

The process of preparing the hull surface is a meticulous one. Molina ensures that everything is perfect before proceeding with the monumental task of turning the hull over. By sanding and faring the hull, they’ve achieved a smooth finish, ready for the final steps.

Preparing the Cradle Boxes

To make this operation possible, Molina and his team have built large cradle boxes. One of these was recently hoisted into position. These cradles will support the hull during the turning process, ensuring its safety throughout.

Creating the Template for Hull Pocket Curve

Molina is making a template for the curve of the hull pocket, which corresponds to the bottom’s curvature. This step requires precision and careful measurements to ensure accuracy. He has taken depth measurements along a laser line, confirming that they are within spec.

Lifting the Cradle Box

The team faced a challenge when lifting the big cradle box, initially planning to lift it manually due to its smaller size compared to previous ones. However, they successfully completed the task using one lifting point and Yan’s innovative approach.

Steel Bars for Wheel Backing Plates

With the weather being perfect, Molina works on preparing steel bars that will act as backing plates for the wheels. He uses an electrical band saw to cut the steel efficiently and precisely.

Square Wheels Around the Hull

For the upcoming task of building square wheels around the hull, Molina decides to construct more wheels to spread the loads better. This allows for the completion of this crucial component inside their barn space.

A Family Effort

The episode showcases the hard work and dedication of Molina Yuan, his family, and the team at Sun Hill Farm. Their collective effort continues as they build their dream boat, emphasizing perseverance in the face of challenges.

Next Steps

In the upcoming episodes, viewers can look forward to the final stages of building these square wheels and ultimately turning the hull over. This episode provides a sneak peek into what’s ahead for Molina Yuan and his family in their exciting sailing adventure.
