Patrick Laine’s Three Body Problem Navigation Challenge – Part 2
In this episode of his captivating navigation challenge, Patrick Laine takes on the second part of the three body problem. Setting off to Suwisseer Rock, which is located a remarkable 250 nautical miles Northeast of his initial location in Ireland, Patrick embarks on an adventure filled with exciting decisions and unique challenges.Phase Two Begins: Navigating the High-Pressure ZonePuzzled by his dilemma as a high-pressure zone looms in front of him, Patrick decides to analyze the situation meticulously. With a deep understanding of the winds’ behavior under these conditions, he devises a strategy that involves waiting for 24 hours and drifting with the tide until a favorable northwest wind arises. This smart move allows him to sail towards his destination seamlessly without getting stuck in the high-pressure zone. The Navigation Channel ChallengeTo make the journey more intriguing, Patrick decides to test out a navigation channel idea. Instead of stopping at various ports along the way, he plans to sail through the entire passage between the Outer Hebrides and Scotland without any stops. This unique approach not only makes his adventure more challenging but also allows him to experience sailing in an unorthodox manner.A Temporary Fix for the Sheet IssueThroughout this journey, Patrick encounters several challenges, including one with his jib sheet getting caught on the pen multiple times. He shares how he dealt with it by wrapping it in black electrical tape to create a temporary fix and promises himself to come up with something more robust later.Understanding Cardinal BuoysDuring his journey, Patrick highlights the importance of recognizing and understanding cardinal buoys. By knowing their shape, color pattern, and night-time flashes, sailors can easily identify these markers while navigating through unfamiliar waters. The Final Stretch: Arriving at Dliri MarinaProudly accomplishing the second destination in his navigation challenge, Patrick sails towards Dliri Marina. With the completion of this exciting leg of the trip, he sets a new goal for himself – reaching the final destination without any setbacks.Patrick Laine’s Journey: A Captivating AdventurePatrick Laine continues to captivate his audience with his extraordinary sailing adventures, as he navigates through challenging waters and overcomes unexpected obstacles. As he sails towards Suwisseer Rock, it is evident that Patrick’s enthusiasm for exploration and adventure will undoubtedly lead him to greater accomplishments. The Final Destination BeckonsWith the completion of his journey to Suwisseer Rock, Patrick looks forward to the final destination in this thrilling navigation challenge. The spirit of adventure remains strong within him, driving him towards new and exciting experiences at sea.I sail 250 NM to an isolated rock (Sula Sgeir) off the north coast of Scotland, and then turn south for a 350 NM non-stop passage to Dun Laoghaire Ireland (near Dublin). The objective is to see if the tides in the Hebrides / North Channel are too strong to sail against. While I was slowed to 1.8 knots for 3 hours while abeam Islay/Rathlin, the rest was completely doable non-stop. I demo 'shaking out' a reef and give a brief tutorial for beginners on navigation marks in harbours. Nothing too exciting/dramatic, but good fun.
