A year ago today, we embarked on an unforgettable journey that has transformed us from landlubbers to seasoned sailors. Little did we know, this milestone would set the stage for our most terrifying adventure yet.
Celebrating a successful delivery of Frankie’s friend’s yacht from the Canary Islands back to its home port in mainland Spain marked not only an achievement but also our entrance into the notorious ‘danger zone.’ It’s in this area that many sailors face their greatest fear – encounters with orcas. Several attacks in recent years have made headlines for their devastating impact on boats and lives.
Preparations
Frankie and I carefully packed our essentials, fully aware of the challenges ahead. As we’ve grown into this sailing lifestyle, we’ve accumulated invaluable experience that would prove crucial in facing what was to come.
The Journey Begins
Ahead of the dangerous waters lay a bittersweet moment – bidding farewell to Rubicon. Despite its differences from our own triling boat, this sail marked a new beginning and an exciting collaboration with our fourth crew member, Jah.
Sailing in the Right Direction
Under the guidance of 20-knot winds, we sailed upwind towards our destination. With spirits high and bellies full from Frankie’s delightful cooking, life seemed perfect at sea.
Navigating the Storm
Unexpectedly, strong winds greeted us as night fell. Amidst a storm and challenging conditions, we took turns steering while ensuring safety at all times.
The Night of the Encounter
In the dead of night, reality set in as we crossed paths with orcas. Twice. A heart-stopping experience that will forever be etched in our memories.
Towards Safety
Despite the daunting situation, we maintained hope and a strategic approach to navigate through. Steering towards the nearest coast, Frankie and I relied on our skills, teamwork, and sheer determination.
The Aftermath
Pulling into Marina Kadis marked the end of a harrowing journey. Despite damage to our rudder, and sleepless nights battling fear and exhaustion, we were incredibly grateful for our safety.
Moving Forward
In reflecting on this adventure, it’s not only the orca encounters but also the moments of triumph that make us proud. As we stand at the threshold of a new year since our maiden voyage in search of our home port, let us be reminded that every journey comes with its trials.
