72-Hour Sailing Test: Assessing Crew Compatibility for an Atlantic Crossing | EP27

Hi there, from high we are Pat and Frankie, a couple who have ditched the 9 to 5 life. Our mission is to explore the world and find our ideal home base while establishing our lifestyle brand. We’re excited to share our journey with you.

Introduction

In this extended episode, we are embarking on a 72-hour test sail to assess the compatibility of our crew member, Ricardo, for an upcoming Atlantic Ocean crossing. Our goal is to ensure that all parties involved feel comfortable and confident in their roles before taking on the vast Atlantic waters together.

The Test Sail

To simulate an authentic long passage, we have prepared food, planned shifts like a real passage, and focused on training with sailing. Our plan is to sail around the Canary Islands without stopping, exploring various aspects of living on the ocean for several days.

Why Conduct a Test Sail?

A test sail is crucial before undertaking any significant voyage like crossing the Atlantic Ocean. It allows crew members to:

  • Gauge how they react to being on open water
  • Experience night sailing and unfamiliar weather conditions
  • Determine compatibility, skills, and personalities within the group

Key Objectives of the Test Sail

To make this test sail a success and ensure crew compatibility, we set forth several key objectives:

  • Conduct a safety briefing and establish a shift plan for seamless rotation
  • Familiarize Ricardo with essential sailing tasks such as hoisting sails, handling winches, and clutches
  • Monitor how everyone adjusts to life at sea during both daytime and nighttime

The Final Debrief

After completing our test sail, we gathered as a crew to debrief on what worked well and identify areas for improvement. This conversation is essential in ensuring everyone feels comfortable with their roles during the upcoming Atlantic crossing.

Next Steps

With our test sail complete, we now move on to finalizing preparations for our Atlantic adventure. Our next steps include checking spare parts against the Arc provided list and making any necessary purchases before setting sail.
