Each year, top sailors converge on the crystal-clear waters surrounding Okinawa to compete in a variety of exciting yacht races, showcasing their skill and expertise on the open seas.

The festival’s highlight is its main race, where participants vie for the coveted championship title. Spectators can enjoy watching these talented sailors battle it out on the water while taking in the breathtaking views of Okinawa’s stunning coastline.

In addition to the exhilarating races, the Okinawa Sailing Festival offers a wide array of activities and experiences for visitors to enjoy. The event’s festive atmosphere is further enhanced by lively music, mouthwatering local cuisine, and various cultural performances.

Visitors can indulge in traditional Okinawan dishes like Goya Champuru (bitter melon stir-fry) and Rafute (slow-cooked pork), all while enjoying the lively tunes of live bands and traditional dance performances.

Exploring the Idyllic Islands

During the festival, attendees have the opportunity to explore some of Okinawa’s most stunning islands, each boasting its own unique character and charm. Popular destinations include the pristine beaches of Zamami Island, the vibrant underwater world surrounding Kouri Island, and the serene waters surrounding Kerama Islands.

Whether you’re an avid sailor looking to compete or simply someone seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, the Okinawa Sailing Festival is not to be missed. This spectacular event celebrates the joy of sailing in one of Japan’s most beautiful settings.

A Call to Action

If you’re ready for an unforgettable journey filled with exciting races, tantalizing cuisine, and breathtaking views, make plans now to attend the Okinawa Sailing Festival. You’ll be glad you did!
I took a break from boat projects to participate in a 450-year-old festival featuring a massive Tug of War. I was honored to join the West Team (RED) in this annual epic battle. The rope weighs over 5 tons and stretches 90 meters long. We paraded it through the streets before facing the opposing team in front of a grandstand of dignitaries. The day concluded with Wahine and me enjoying front-row seats for a spectacular fireworks display.

It’s Respect for the Aged Day here in Japan 🇯🇵—a national holiday that began back in 1947 as “Old Folks Day” before being renamed in the ’60s. I just learned that you officially qualify as “aged” here at 70… which makes me a newbie to...
