Sailing to Nagasaki PART ONE #gunkanjima #sailingjapan #007

Sailing into Nagasaki! A dream come true. As with other Kyushu ports I had been to before, I had arrived by bicycle. A city rich historically, culturally, and topographically, to arrive by sea is a real treat, particularly given that the city just celebrated the 450th anniversary of the first foreign arrivals at Dejima. We also sailed right by what CNN describes as Japan’s most freaky island. Hashima. Wow . . what an eerie place. The most dramatic scene in Skyfall, the Bond movie was filmed there.

The trip was made extra special because both my sons, Ryan and Mackenzie, asked if they could join me for the 100 km passage from Akune. Mack`s wife also made her separate journey to Nagasaki and awaited our arrival.

Sometimes all it takes is a splash of cold water to reset your mind. In this off-grid moment from the edge of Japan, I share a simple nightly ritual — a recycled PET bottle, a roadside breeze, and a reminder that creativity often flows best when we stop...

A Peaceful Eveing in a Remote Bay #japan #sailing #boatlife
A peaceful evening in Buren Bay aboard Wahine. After a shower and supper, I take a quiet 360° look around the anchorage—glassy water, Mitsu’s boat, a generous loaned tender, and my inflatable paddleboard. Sometimes, it’s these calm, ordinary moments...
