Leaving My Boat in Paradise: A Turning Point in My Journey Through Japan #sailing #aging #travel

This video highlights Leg One, a journey that will take me the length of Japan. Ian and I finally arrived at Uken Inlet and Buren Bay. My friend Brian flew in from California to join us for the next leg, only to have his plans take an unexpected turn.

It was profoundly emotional when Mitsu came out in his boat to greet us. It was equally wonderful to reconnect with Mayor and meet Adventure Man Matt Pride once again and Martin and Chiharu on the patch of paradise. Join me on this leg of the journey filled with adventure, surprises, and heartfelt moments and lots of other friends to

After sailing into over 80 ports and visiting all 47 prefectures of Japan, people often ask me, “What’s your favorite place?” Until now, my honest answer has always been: It depends. Usually, it’s the people who make a place special.

But sailing back into the stunning Amami Islands—specifically the peaceful Uken Inlet—I finally have a clear answer.

Amami has everything a sailor dreams of:
🌴 Untouched beaches
🌀 Natural typhoon holes
🌿 Abundant nature
📜 Deep-rooted culture and rich history
🤝 And lifelong friends

This video marks the end of Leg One of my new adventure—A Journey Beyond the Blue Zone—as I leave SV Wahine moored on a buoy (a prized mooring for sailors) and continue north by land. My next destination is Shimane, the final prefecture I’ve yet to visit, and also home to the highest number of centenarians per capita in Japan—the true Blue Zone in Japan

Join me as I close one chapter and begin another—exploring what it means to live long, independently, and well.
