Five Years Aboard: Celebrating a Sailing Milestone
Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone in the Pacific Solo series – five years of continuous adventure aboard our beloved sailboat! This incredible journey has taken us across the globe, exploring exotic locations and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Join us as we reflect on this amazing experience, share valuable insights, and offer tips for those embarking on their own sailing adventures.
Our Journey
Making the decision to live aboard our sailboat was a life-changing moment for our family. We set out on the open waters five years ago with little more than a map, an adventurous spirit, and the drive to see where the wind would take us. The last half-decade has been filled with moments of triumph, unexpected challenges, and countless breathtaking experiences.
Our journey has taken us from the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea to the serene shores of Japan, and every stop along the way has been a unique adventure waiting to unfold. We’ve encountered vibrant cultures, discovered hidden coves, and learned invaluable lessons about living on the water.
Celebrating in Japan
To mark our fifth year sailing together, we decided to return to one of our favorite destinations: Japan. The Japanese islands offered a beautiful setting for reflection and celebration as we looked back on all that we’ve achieved and experienced together. We spent weeks exploring the intricate coastlines, savoring fresh sushi while anchored in quiet coves, and marveled at the ancient temples that dotted the landscape.
Lessons Learned
Navigating our way through these five years has been filled with countless lessons. From mastering the art of short-handed sailing to maintaining a healthy relationship with family onboard, we’ve developed strategies and best practices that have served us well. We’d like to share some of our most valuable insights:
- t
- Embrace flexibility: No plan is set in stone when living aboard a sailboat, so learning to embrace change has been key to our success. t
- Cultivate resourcefulness: From finding creative solutions for boat maintenance issues to sourcing fresh provisions, being resourceful has helped us overcome many challenges on our voyage. t
- Stay connected: Staying in touch with friends and family back home reminds us that there’s life beyond the waves, enriching our overall experience. t
- Savor each moment: Time aboard is precious, so taking a step back to appreciate the beauty around us helps us stay grounded on this continuous journey.
Looking Ahead
The future holds more adventures as we continue our travels across the Pacific. As we reflect on these incredible five years sailing together, we remain inspired by all that awaits. Our commitment to creating engaging content for fellow sailors and adventurers remains steadfast, and we eagerly anticipate what experiences and discoveries the coming years will bring.

Five years ago this month, I moved on board Wahine, embarked on my maiden voyage, and started this YouTube channel. My Grandson and family were with me and he took this video. It’s been a journey filled with highs and lows, living the dream with the occasional nightmare. Having explored 70 ports, I’ve covered half of Japan and there's so much more to come.
