Epic Sailing Adventures on a Tradewind 35

Francis Hawkings, a renowned figure among seasoned sailors, has traversed over 35,000 miles on his beloved boat, Plain Song. Having sailed other boats he owned or chartered, he first came to fame during his solo crossing from Hawaii to Japan.

Originally from the United Kingdom and now living in the United States since 1987, Francis was raised in the north of England. His sailing journey began with dinghies under the tutelage of his father in Scotland, where he later joined a retired Naval Captain who taught him both racing and cruising.

With a deep-rooted love for sailing that cannot be dampened, Francis purchased his first cruising boat – a Contesta 26 – which exemplifies the long heel, traditional boat design he has always been fond of. This was just the beginning of an extraordinary voyage that spans over decades.

The Tradewind 35 Journey

In his pursuit of long-distance cruising, Francis acquired the Tradewind 35 in 1992. This classic yacht, part of a limited production series with only about 75 boats built, represents not just a boat design but a way of life for Francis.

Built by a small Boatyard in Devon, England, and designed in the 1980s (possibly even earlier), the Tradewind 35 boasts its own unique charm. Its weighty displacement of 10 tons signifies the long heel heritage Francis admires.

The Boating Odyssey

Francis’ adventure with the Tradewind 35 spans a remarkable journey across different continents, including sailing from California to French Polynesia, then on to Chile, and even traversing Cape Horn. His passion for cruising is not only displayed in long journeys but also in coastal sailing.

Sailing Alone

Throughout his travels, Francis faced several milestones, including learning to sail solo. Initially, he enjoyed sharing experiences with friends on sailing adventures. However, over time, his preference shifted towards solo cruising, realizing that he could adapt the boat and enhance its manageability for solitary journeys.

A Mindset Shift

The evolution of Francis’ journey extends beyond geographical exploration to a profound mindset shift. This is exemplified by his boat’s name, Plain Song, inspired by Gregorian chant – the monastic music from the Middle Ages in Europe, signifying humanity’s small place amidst powerful natural forces.

Francis’ Itineraries

After years of preparation and with a strong drive for long-distance cruising, Francis embarked on his solo journey. His plan initially included sailing to the Philippines, but upon discovering Okinawa’s beauty through an exhibit in Chicago, he adjusted his route.

Francis has been cruising around Japan, making stops in various places and experiencing unique cultural interactions, despite challenges posed by the global pandemic. His plan is to base his boat in the Philippines for the next couple of years, after departing from Okinawa.

The Continuing Voyage

Francis Hawkings’ story continues to evolve with every sail. His adventures offer insights into the art of solo sailing, the significance of mindset in challenging endeavors, and the enduring love for the sea and exploration.

Until your next adventure, remember: It’s never too late.

Francis Hawkings is a seasoned sailor who began his maritime adventures in Scotland.

In this video, Francis shares his experiences aboard `Plainsong`, his Tradewind 35, which has taken him to Tahiti, Pitcairn, Easter Island, Cape Horn, Patagonia, and, most recently, Japan.

A true gentleman of the sea, Francis’s tales are a treasure for serious sailors and anyone captivated by life on the ocean. He is the author of the Pacific Crossing Guide 4th Edition, published by Bloomsbury Publishing.

This is Part One of the interview, in which Francis shares his sailing story thus far. Stay tuned for Part Two, where he offers invaluable tips for cruising in Japan.
