Lowell here, kicking off Leg Four of my Journey Beyond the Blue Zone!
After sailing the Ryukyu Islands, the leaving my boat to catch up to the annual Cherry Blossom migration and visiting Japan’s Longevity Hot Spots in Shimane and Nagano, I am now heading north to re-visit a 400 year old symbol of longevity and strength and making a brief stop in Tokyo to meet up with an 80-year-old kickboxer and visit a 400-year-old symbol of strength.
As always, I’m protecting my skin outdoors with Dermalogica Skincare — not to look young, but to stay healthy!
Wish me luck as I chase the cherry blossoms once again. Follow the adventure!
Check out the skin care product I use from Dermologica. The older I get and particularly because I spend so much time out of doors, I have realised the need to take care of my skin, and to my surprise I am enjoying the daily routine.
If you want to check out the Dermalogica products I am using, go to https://dermalogica.jp?sca_ref=781255… . If you choose to order anything, type in: lowell-dermalogica and you will get a 10% discount.

Taking Out the Trash: BoatLife in Japan #boatlife #sailingjapan japan #cruisinglife
Taking out the trash isn’t always straightforward—especially when you live on a sailboat, anchored off a remote Japanese hamlet. In this short glimpse, I row ashore to meet the garbage man and navigate the very local—and very specific—rules of Jap...
Catching Bee-Repelling Insects for My Boat #SailingSafety #naturehacks #travel
I’ve had severe allergic reactions to bee stings—so when I heard fake dragonflies might ward them off, I ordered six off Amazon. They’re going up on my sailboat as a kind of quirky defense system. Should I name them? And… what eats dragonflies anyw...
Morning Chores on the Water: Bailing 30 Liters of Rainwater! #japan #sailing #travel #boatlife
Morning chores on the boat never end — especially after a good downpour! 🌧 Today in Buren Bay, it’s me, a bucket, and about 30 liters of rainwater in the dinghy. If only I had my jerry cans… A salty little reminder that even solo, you can still s...
Going Ashore: Drenched but Happy. #boatlife #japan #writer
Soaked, smiling, and stepping ashore. I actually like the rain, but later today a gale is going to glow and I have writing to do so I am moving my `writing room` ashore this morning to Mitsu`s house which is near the boat. Life on a sailboat means embrac...
Life on a Boat Means You Gotta Walk When You Can #japan #coastguard #boatlife
I’m off the boat and getting my steps in—aiming for 10K today while I’m on land. When you live on a sailboat, it’s easy to stay confined, and my doctor reminded me: daily walking is non-negotiable. Tonight’s route takes me past one of Japan’s ...
