The Amel Mango is a stunning 52 ft (16 m) ocean cruising sailboat, built in 1989 by the French shipyard AMEL in La Rochelle. This particular Mango was one of 79/80 units produced under their High Sea category with category A certification for navigation and Category 1 under German Standards.
The Amel Mango is a beautiful example of AMEL’s commitment to quality, featuring an all-laminated hull and unique design features such as a deep keel (M-grade) bolted below. These qualities are highlighted in the original brochure provided, offering insights into the boat’s original specifications.
The interior is a blend of classic and modern design elements. The galley is equipped with an ample L-shaped workspace, providing plenty of storage for day-to-day essentials including a coffee maker, oven (2000W), microwave, and gas stove. Adjacent to this is a 12V fridge and a full-size freezer compartment. There’s also a separate chart table area within the salon for navigating while seated.
The boat offers spacious accommodations with 3 private cabins, each equipped with comfortable double beds. The forward cabin and aft starboard cabin offer a layout suitable for sleeping as well as sitting. All heads have electric toilets (SeaMarin) and freshwater shower options that can be completely sealed from the outside, ensuring watertight conditions.
Powered by a Perkins 4-236 80hp diesel engine (2311 hours at the time of filming), the boat also features a Westerbeke 6kw generator with 626 hours. The main sail area totals about 150 sqm, including a mainsail of 34 sqm, a genoa of 72 sqm, and a spinnaker of 76 sqm. Electrical systems include solar panels (1190W in total), windlass, winches, furling system for the genoa, etc. The boat can comfortably accommodate 10-15 people.
The owners have enjoyed sailing this Mango in the Western Mediterranean, from Zypern to Greece and Turkey. During a two-month period after purchase, they sailed extensively, clocking around 9007 nautical miles while using their motors for about 170 hours due to light wind conditions. They also experienced comfortable sleeping arrangements despite the limited headroom in the aft cabin typical of classic boats like this.
The yacht is equipped with advanced energy management systems, including 1190W solar panels (mounted on both davits and the hard top), which provide about 4-6 kW daily during peak sunny periods in July. The boat also has a 600 Ah lithium battery bank to manage power effectively for running appliances such as the oven and air conditioning.
Despite being well-maintained, some components have required repairs or replacement since purchase. Issues addressed include the hydraulic bow thruster, hydraulic rudder control system, impeller for the coolant circulation pump of the Perkins engine, and electrical conversion box for operating the electric windlass with a 24V input. Most of these repairs were conducted in Greece where spare parts could be sourced.
The Amel Mango represents a beautiful and robust sailboat suitable for ocean voyaging and coastal cruising. With a strong focus on quality design, engineering, and safety standards, it remains a popular choice among seasoned sailors looking for an adventure at sea.
If you’re captivated by the Amel Mango and are considering your next sailing journey, there’s a wealth of information and resources available. Consider reaching out to local yacht clubs or marine forums for further advice and insights from fellow sailors who’ve navigated these waters before.
Furthermore, exploring sailboat insurance options or attending sailing courses tailored to your skill level can enhance both safety and enjoyment on board. Whether embarking on short coastal cruises or ambitious transocean passages, the right preparation and knowledge will set the stage for unforgettable adventures aboard the Amel Mango.
