Ep 224 | We Need New Sails. Time to Measure Up. Sailing Nutshell, Australia
May 14, 2021 by Life in a Nutshell | Language: EN Play Time: 00:22:13 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

With our sails coming to the end of their lives and needing regular minor repairs we have recently been aware that we probably need to address this issue especially for when we are in the Kimberley, which is a very remote location.
We have also been deciding whether to change a few things in our sail format.
Magnus likes the high cut yanky headsail, but it is not the best sail for light wind conditions and the Kimberley is well known for its light wind conditions.
So, we are deciding whether to get a larger headsail, possibly a 135%.
We are also converting from hanked-on sails to furling headsail and staysail. So, now is the perfect opportunity to make the change and get a larger headsail.
Another consideration is whether to go loose footed on our mail and mizzen sails or to stick with a fixed foot.
Sails are an expensive investment on a boat., so, it’s time to get some quotes and make some decisions.
After getting a few quotes and talking to quite a few sailmakers in Australia, we are not really happy with the result, plus the quotes are way above our price range, so we do a bit more sleuthing and find a Canadian company called Precision Sails which deals with online ordering and has a good following with YouTube sailing channels.
We reach out to see if we can partner with them and they come to the party.
They answer all of our questions fully, offer excellent online resources by way of YouTube videos and even arrange to call us to discuss any questions which we may have. They are very professional, helpful and knowledgeable. With all of our questions answered, we decide to go ahead.
We make a few major design decisions which include getting fully battened, loose footed mizzen and mainsail and a 135% genoa.
So, here we are measuring for four new beautiful sails for Nutshell. We will now feel a lot safer when we sail in the Kimberley.
Magnus also installs a new heat exchanger on Nutshell too.
I hope you enjoy this episode.
Thanks for watching and see you all next time.
Until then.
Wendy and Magnus
