I Painted My Sailboat! And I CHEATED!! - Ep 283 - Lady K Sailing
June 28, 2024 by Lady K Sailing | Language: EN Play Time: 00:14:43 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

In today’s video, Lady K Sailing, an experienced sailor and boat enthusiast, embarks on a unique journey – painting her own sailboat. This endeavor has been full of mistakes, lessons learned, and incredible discoveries that she shares in detail.
Sanders: The Key to Preparing Your Boat
To start with the essential tool for this job, Lady K used a variety of sanders. Initially, she had issues with the skill and a battery sander that failed quickly. However, the DeWalt, an old-school corded sander, proved to be incredibly durable, outperforming others such as the Swirly Boy polisher, which cut well but left swirl marks. The 5-inch DeWalt was preferred for its effectiveness in preparing her sailboat.
Materials Used for Painting
The choice of materials was crucial to achieving a quality paint job. First, the boat had its stripes sanded down to 220 grit using a combination of sanders and fillers like InteLux Watertight epoxy filler for any imperfections.
Priming was done with Pettit Easy Prime, recommended for use with Easy Epoxy. She used a medium nap roller for the first coat of primer and followed up by sanding at 220 grit before applying two coats of Pettit’s easy poxy paint. This process resulted in a smooth, uniform finish without any brush or roller marks.
Paint Application Tips
A common misconception about boat painting is that it’s complex and difficult. Lady K debunked this notion by sharing how she applied the paint without tipping or having to go back over with a brush. Her method involved applying the paint in 3-foot segments, doubling back as needed to remove roller marks.
Tackling The Paint Job
Her project spanned months of continuous work due to the boat’s location an hour away from her home. Despite the challenges, including messy workspace and time management issues, she emphasized that the painting process is doable with dedication.
A Special Kit for Painting
Lady K also introduced her handy epoxy kit which includes all essential tools and materials for any fiberglass repair on her boat. This portable box contained everything from measuring cups, gloves to epoxy itself.
Final Thoughts
Finally, painting a boat does require significant time and effort, but it’s certainly manageable. Her unique experience showcases that with the right tools, patience, and determination, one can achieve professional-looking results. Don’t be intimidated; painting your boat can indeed turn out to be a rewarding journey.
