Don’t Sink! Check These Vital Aspects Before Launch – Lady K Sailing Ep 275
Avoid potential catastrophes by ensuring your boat is in top condition before launching. Join Ian and Tim from Lady K Sailing as they discuss essential safety checks you should perform prior to putting your boat in the water.
Safety First – Checking Your Boat Before Launch
When prepping your vessel for launch, the priority is ensuring it’s safe to navigate on water. Start by inspecting every through-hull and seacock for smooth operation without resistance. Verify their condition to avoid any potential failures while on the water.
Inspect Your Core
Water intrusion is a primary cause of sailboat damage. Begin by examining above-water areas for any signs of moisture. Utilize a moisture meter if necessary to detect wet spots underneath the fiberglass. Identify and fix the source of water intrusion rather than solely addressing the wet spot.
Safety Checks Beyond Sinking Risks
Post through-hull checks, evaluate other crucial safety aspects:
- Fire Prevention: Verify all fire extinguishers, CO detectors, and propane sniffers are in place and functional.
- Rigging Inspection: Assess the standing rigging, turnbuckles, clevis pins, and cotter pins for any signs of wear or corrosion. Check running rigging is operational and sufficient for sail handling under load.
- Engine Checks: Replace coolant if necessary, perform an oil change, inspect the impeller, and service winches. Don’t overlook checking for diesel leaks if applicable.
- Dock Lines and Towing Equipment: Have all required lines in good condition and sufficient quantity aboard. An extra tow line secured at the bow is advisable for emergencies.
A thorough inspection and servicing will ensure your boat’s operational readiness before launching into water, making this a great checklist to reference each year!
