DIY Catamaran Refit: CHARTER to LUXURY OWNER'S SUITE Transformation!

In this episode of Jessica and Ryan Adventures, we delve into their ambitious journey of transforming a charter catamaran into an opulent owner’s suite. This detailed account captures every aspect of the refit process, from demolition to meticulous reconstruction and upgrades.

Tearing Out the Old Layout

Initially, the space housed two heads and showers. To begin this significant makeover, Jessica and Ryan tore out the existing facilities, exposing a raw shell. They first removed the bathroom tank and subsequently targeted the toilet for demolition. Their approach involved focusing on ‘baby steps’, methodically dismantling components while maintaining clarity.

Constructing New Layouts

The next phase involved constructing a completely new layout. The central feature was the conversion of this area into a toilet space, with provisions for a sink and vanity area, alongside a standing shower located further in.

Enhancing Privacy and Aesthetics

To enhance privacy within the owner’s suite, they added a door. This transformation not only increased privacy but also contributed to the overall aesthetics of the space.

The Owner’s Suite Transformation

Initially, the configuration included a sideways bed which was then transformed to face differently with new bedding. The duo extended the platform to accommodate a queen-size bed, alongside creating cabinets underneath and on its sides for added storage capacity.

To ensure comfort, there were specific additions like a little TV incorporated into this luxury suite. They also created a more spacious environment by fitting in a queen-sized bed which offered ample room for Jessica’s feet, not touching either the wall or headboard just barely. For organizing belongings efficiently, they constructed a closet which proved to be narrow but provided enough space for their crates used for storage.

Built-In Customizations and Amenities

They’ve included thoughtful touches throughout, such as the storage design beneath items like desks or bulkheads to make use of all available space. Notably, they also integrated a washer-dryer setup which was vented into an adjacent locker, offering them both convenience and additional storage for laundry paraphernalia. Their innovative approach extends to the leaning toilet designed to fit the curvature of the hull.

Improved Aesthetics with Modern Upgrades

The bathroom now boasts a luxurious feel, replete with Corian countertops. Despite some minor trim work remaining, their work includes adding mirrors, fitting vents for privacy and shower humidity control, creating large custom showers, installing cabinetry and other details like anti-slip flooring for safety.

The Outcome

The transformation is not only a major upgrade but a complete overhaul of the previous layout, making it feel significantly more luxurious. Jessica expresses her satisfaction with the result, appreciating not just the visible changes like storage solutions or a spacious design but also small details such as an effective dry system and electrical setups which contribute to maintaining cleanliness and functionality.

In this episode of Jessica and Ryan Adventures, viewers get a rare look at a DIY boat transformation process. From demoing old layouts to meticulously reconstructing new spaces with luxurious amenities, the duo’s journey encapsulates innovative problem-solving within limited marine space, proving once again that with creative design and smart engineering solutions, almost anything is possible aboard a yacht.

Your Turn

If this refit project has sparked any interest or ideas in you, remember that taking on your own could turn a charter catamaran into an owner’s suite retreat, filled with personalized touches and features. It requires planning, patience, and DIY skills but the satisfaction is undoubtedly rewarding.

It's been 6 years in the making. This is our owners hull tour! Ryan has been working on our owners conversion on and off between having babies, covid, cruising, and lay offs but he's finally almost finished!
