As a rookie sailor, going through the Kurushima Strait and under the famed Kurushima Kaikyou Bridge (reportedly the world`s first triple-span bridge in the world) had my attention for several days. I knew I had to pass under the bridge at slack tide to avoid the whirlpools that form. As it turned out, I arrived a tad early. After 4 hours of cruising in low visibility, the fog began to lift and as I turned into the channel the bridge came in sight. The turbulence was modest as I passed under the bridge. A hundred minutes later, I cycled over the same bridge. In that short time, the tide had changed and the incoming current was already at 4.5 knots and whirlpools were forming. From the bridge, I watched with awe the power of the sea, glad that I had successfully avoided the tidal turbulence.
