Sailing Across the Pacific Ocean | 19 Days at Sea Adventure

Last week, you joined us as we crossed the Equator and marveled at the local wildlife while sailing from Panama to French Polynesia. This week, let’s continue our thrilling journey across the immense Pacific Ocean.

The Doldrums Challenge

Well, we’re officially in the doldrums – Ray’s digging out the spinnaker as we find ourselves in an area called the intertropical convergence zone. This is where the trade winds meet, creating notoriously no wind or rain.

“Sailors call it the doldrums or sometimes you’ll hear it called the Horse latitudes because Legend has it ship sailing to the new world pushed horses that they were transporting overboard to lighten the load and conserve resources during the long periods of calm.”

Spinnaker Trials

Thankfully, today’s boating technology provides us with more resourceful options than simply tossing animals overboard. Our trusty spinnaker and Code Zero sails became our saving grace in these challenging conditions.

Engine Power and Laundry Day

We used our engines to navigate through calm patches, with the wind and sail combination providing a considerable boost in speed. Even so, we took some time for essential boat maintenance and chores such as transferring fuel from jerry cans into our tanks.

Day 19 – Still in Love with the Ocean

We’ve experienced various challenges during our voyage, but none have dampened our spirits or love for this adventure. Despite facing struggles with wind direction and boat sailings, we continue to find joy in our surroundings. From navigating through the doldrums and managing laundry to cooking scrumptious onboard meals, Holly and Ray are grateful for each other’s support.

The Journey Continues
