The Rudder Fell Off Our Sailing Catamaran
Sailing across the vast and unpredictable expanse of the Pacific Ocean brings countless moments of serene tranquility as well as unforeseen challenges. This particular voyage aboard our sailing catamaran proved to be no exception when disaster struck; the rudder fell off while only a few miles away from safety in the Tuamotus archipelago of French Polynesia.
Just days earlier, we had departed the Marquesas Islands—specifically Nuku Hiva—replete with cherished memories. Our journey was set to return us to the crystal-clear waters and unparalleled diving opportunities of the Tuamotus. With favorable winds at 20-25 knots on our beam and an anticipated voyage of approximately 400 nautical miles, we set off optimistically. Little did we realize that Mother Nature had a different plan in store for us.
Upon realizing the predicament, I immediately considered possible actions. One crucial factor guiding my decisions was our impending steering system overhaul. Noticing that the existing setup was less than ideal only intensified my resolve to face this issue head-on and not succumb to fear or despair.
Ahead lay numerous uncertainties; however, one thing was for certain—the resilience of both Wonderlust, our vessel, and our unwavering determination. As we moved through the waves under reduced sail after furling the screecher and using the jib to blanket it, thoughts began circulating on how best to handle this crisis while prioritizing safety.
We were fortunate that despite gusts reaching up to 27 knots and menacing squalls that challenged our course correction strategies, we managed to remain relatively on track. Adapting to less-than-desirable conditions taught us invaluable lessons in maintaining equilibrium between pushing limits and respecting forces beyond our control.
In retrospect, it seems a bit ironic that just days earlier, we had been basking in the calm afternoons and nights with only light breezes and smooth waters as companions. This serendipitous break provided us respite and rejuvenation amid what would prove to be one of our most demanding passages.
Nonetheless, upon recognizing that only one bolt held the rudder cassette in place—while others had sheared off—we knew it was crucial to secure this issue immediately. While still miles away from land, the situation was manageable if approached methodically.
Fabio worked diligently on finding a solution while maintaining minimal sail settings that ensured control and safety for our journey into the Tuamotus’ lagoon entrance—a delicate maneuver already fraught with its challenges without adding this crisis to our plates. With a collective sense of urgency yet calculated precision, he managed to detach the rudder from its original position, effectively halting potential disaster in its tracks.
Following hours of careful manipulation and strategic planning (albeit amidst squalls threatening our course stability), we devised an innovative strategy to attach the helmard directly to the transom, allowing for manual control until a permanent fix could be found upon reaching land. Despite uncertainties about navigating one-handedly into an uncharted atoll entrance during twilight hours, optimism fueled our spirits.
Upon completing this daring feat and re-establishing communication with land-based resources via satellite phone (to request spare parts or any available assistance), we embarked on what would become a defining moment in our voyage’s memory. With renewed confidence stemming from the successful resolution of our immediate issue, we charted a course for success.
This unforgettable episode underscored a core truth about life at sea: the importance of being adaptable, vigilant, and resourceful—qualities that transcend mere survival on vast oceans. By learning to adapt in unprecedented situations while maintaining an unwavering commitment to problem-solving under pressure, we not only salvaged our journey but enhanced our ability to face future adversities head-on.
Despite unforeseen setbacks and uncertainties lurking within the vast Pacific, we emerged stronger than ever, armed with valuable life lessons that will serve us well in forthcoming adventures across uncharted territories. As such, this experience becomes emblematic of what it means to be a Wanderer, navigating both treacherous waters and inner demons.
The rudder incident served as more than just a hiccup in our journey; rather, it was an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Moving forward, we’ll carry these lessons etched into the very fabric of Wonderlust, forging ahead towards new horizons with unwavering determination.

The RUDDER FELL OFF Our Sailing Catamaran [ Good Thing We Have 2 ]
Sailing around the world you never know what’s going to happen out on the open ocean. The force of nature can test your limits, the boat's limits or it can be the most magical experience. Sailing from the Marquesas to the Tuamotus in French Polynesia was a testament to this, and ultimately ended with an unfortunate surprise we were hoping to avoid.
