Sailing with the BEST DOWNWIND SAIL [FIRST TIME] on our Seawind 1600 Catamaran

Sailing around the world is a thrilling endeavor best served with specific sails for different sailing conditions. Throughout our journeys, we have faced many challenges in finding the perfect sail for deep downwind sailing. Today, we are excited to launch our new wing sail, hoping it will prove to be an absolute game-changer as we sail 50 nautical miles from Taha to Fakarava within daylight.

Challenges and Excitement

The journey is filled with challenges. Unfortunately, we won’t be leaving or entering the passes at an ideal time. It’s a thrilling adventure, as we face gnarly conditions, but keep watching to see how the day unfolds.

Setting Up the Wing Sail

With excitement and anticipation, we prepare our wing sail. This incredible piece of equipment is provided by Precision Sales. The wing sail installation involves securing it properly on our Seawind 1600 Catamaran, with meticulous attention to detail to ensure a smooth sailing experience.

The First Test

After setting up the wing sail, we are eager to put it to the test. As we set out from Taha towards Fakarava, the wind is climbing steadily, and waves begin to form. Our wing sail performs exceptionally well at first, providing lift and forward momentum, preventing the sail from collapsing, and keeping the leeches open.

Navigating Challenges

However, as the wind continues to move forward of the beam, we make a quick decision to drop the sail. It’s an important lesson learned in always being prepared and adaptable during sailing adventures.

The Arrival

As we approach Fakarava, the challenge of navigating through the pass proves to be exhilarating. We manage to avoid potential mishaps and secure our vessel in a suitable anchorage spot just as sunset approaches.

Conclusion

This journey with the wing sail is an incredible milestone in our sailing adventures. It pushes us to test new techniques and face challenging conditions while keeping the spirit of exploration and determination at the forefront.

The smile on our faces says it all, as we look forward to more experiences like this in our extraordinary journey around the world.

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Exploring the world, connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how great food can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. Seeking to balance the desire to explore and travel to beautiful, remote locations while leaving no footprint, minimizing the Hawthorne effect of the observers who change the environment she or he observes.

We hope to inspire people and showcase the possibility of living an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment, all while keeping it real. Sharing the trials and tribulations of living off-grid, acknowledging the discomfort of detoxing from the modern world, finding pleasure in the subtleties of nature and joy in simplicity. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration, for purpose. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world! Subscribe now to join our sailing adventure.
