From SQUALLS to SERENITY: Sailing Upwind to Marquesas
We’re hunkered down in Tikehau, a tiny atoll in the Tuamotus, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, waiting for squally weather to pass until we can continue our sailing journey to the Marquesas, the only safe haven for sailors spending cyclone season in French Polynesia.
Taking the time to look in the lagoon’s clear water, we see the life we are part of, the lagoon is a mirror of what we are, what we can be. It’s not just water, it’s a lesson. We are not stuck if we look, if we learn, if we see what’s really important. If we see these moments for what they are, not interruptions, but life, real and raw. The delay becomes a way to learn: it’s not about where you go, it’s about how you live when you are there.
The weather soon changes, and a brief break in the storms gives us a chance to sail 165 miles east to Fakarava, one step closer to the Marquesas. Fingers crossed we’ll make it in time.

Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind 1600 catamaran, SV Wanderlust, in September. We’re documenting boat life as live aboard sailors, sharing our learnings, sailing adventures, travel experiences and delicious meals cooked on board. We're sailing SV Wanderlust to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere.
