Repairing Our Sailing Catamaran’s Rudder in the Tuamotu Archipelago
In the last episode, our rudder fell off after rounding a reef at the remote atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. Now we had to navigate the pass and across the bommy lagoon to the anchorage with just one rudder. Then figure out how we were going to tackle the repair. Fortunately, our friends from Delos and We Sail were in the anchorage and we were about to experience the best aspect of the sailing community.Joining Forces
Our friends from Delos and We Sail were just arriving at our anchorage site, as we motored to the reef pass on one rudder. With some slack tide we thought around 6:30am-650, we should be there in about 45 minutes or so. It was a crazy situation for us but fortunately, we still had our starboard rudder and managed to get through the passage unscathed.Anchoring Up
The next day we assessed the damage to our rudder, which appeared not as bad as we initially thought. Everything seemed fine except that one thing was bent a little bit, so I would have to straighten it up and the pain holding the cassette to the Gant also needed straining up on shore with some serious hammering. The Repair Begins
Assessing the Situation
Upon arrival to Ro’yoa, we were able to assess the rudder in better light and found it fairly straight, although not perfect. But as with any boat project, perfection is often the enemy of good enough. We decided to proceed with our repair using the best parts of what we had.The Fix
Brian from Delos and Warren from We Sail joined forces with us to help repair our rudder. They were a huge help in ensuring everything was tight, straight, and would hold while underway. Using washers, grinding, hammering and the expertise of these seasoned cruisers, we were able to complete the job successfully.Camaraderie Among Boaters
Being able to rely on friends and fellow sailors is such a great aspect of our sailing community. They are always ready with help, laughs, jokes, and camaraderie when we find ourselves in need. In times of challenge or adversity, this support and unbreakable bond we share can be relied upon. Conclusion
Crisis averted! With the help of friends and good old-fashioned perseverance, we managed to repair our rudder in Ro’yoa. Now that it was fixed, we were ready to continue on with our adventure through the Tuamotu Archipelago.Delos + WEsail Help REPAIR THE RUDDER on our Sailing Catamaran Locations
