Turning Inconvenience Into An Adventure
April 28, 2024 by Gone with the Wynns | Language: EN Play Time: 00:26:52 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

The sun was just beginning its ascent into the bright, cloudless sky of the Philippines, casting a golden glow across the calm waters that surrounded us. The perfect conditions for diving made it impossible to ignore our looming problem. Our visas were set to expire in 3 days, and despite our attempts at renewing online, we found ourselves facing another option: to ship our passports back to Subic.
>Forced Into an Adventure
The decision was made to ride bikes to the airport to drop off an urgent application. A 32-35 km (about 20-22 miles) bike ride may seem like a standard workout, but remember this is us we’re talking about – with our minimalistic gear and ebikes ready for more of an adrenaline rush than just a casual ride.
>The Ride
Armed with snacks, drinks, and a camera to document the journey, we set off. As predicted, the trip wasn’t for the faint-hearted. With minimal preparation and hardly any breaks (our first major hill proved quite… strenuous), it highlighted our true levels of determination. We felt a mix of elation and dread at what lay ahead.
>The Filipino Experience
What really stood out was the incredible hospitality we encountered. Whether it was navigating through rush hour in a bustling school area, seeking directions from kind strangers, or enjoying a refreshing coconut milk latte at our final stop before the airport – the people were incredibly warm and helpful.
>The Final Stretch
Despite the physical exhaustion and fear of not making it in time for our flight, we persisted. As Nikki would say, ‘it’s a test of our patience and perseverance.’ And we had passed. The world together – as cheesy as it sounds, it was definitely a turning point.
>The Takeaway
Not only did the bike ride challenge us physically, but it also highlighted how bureaucracy can impede our journey, no matter how remote or prepared we think we are. And yet, through every adversity, there’s always a silver lining – Filipino cuisine, their love for karaoke, and their genuine warmth and friendliness, making us realize that even in the face of an inconvenient inconvenience, one could still have an unforgettable adventure.

Our week takes an unexpected turn when our efforts to renew our visas fail. We must make a mad dash to civilization or risk being in the Philippines illegally. Because no matter how far away we sail, or how remote the destination, bureaucracy is the one thing we cannot escape.
And, rather than take the easy route, we decided to turn the whole inconvenience into a challenge.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Things We're Most Curious About...
GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.
Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity
