Life At Sea: Chill Mornings In The Galley

Life At Sea: A Gourmet Cashew Milk Latte Routine

Join us aboard our vessel as we kick off another delightful morning routine. If you’re tuning in from last week, we’ve just set sail for South Africa, and during the previous episode, I shared with you my mouth-watering toache recipe – which spurred a flurry of requests from our Curiosity Crew for more recipes and a galley tour. Today, I thought it was high time we change things up a bit by inviting you on one of my cherished onboard rituals. This isn’t something I do every single morning; however, I ensure to indulge in this once a week or before embarking on any significant sailing adventure. The Morning Wake-Up Routine As usual aboard the Wynns’ vessel, our mornings begin with vitamins – I’m being totally candid here. But since we’ve already crossed that bridge this morning, let’s move forward to our next ritual: coffee. Coffee is undeniably Jason’s domain. When we first met, he couldn’t even make a cup of joe; he’d wait for me to wake up just so he could enjoy his morning brew. Over the years, I’ve taught him how to craft his own coffee concoctions, and ever since, he’s been on an enlightening journey of caffeine exploration. So if today’s video solely focused on coffee, it would indeed span approximately 20 minutes. For a comprehensive guide, you’ll need to leave us a comment below, as we could make that happen. The Ultimate Cashew Milk Latte But for this particular morning, let’s keep it simple and relish a lovely latte together. First things first – we need milk. Today, we’ll be making our very own homemade cashew milk because nothing compares to its heavenly flavor in coffee. Homemade Cashew Milk: An Onboard Boon Adapting to life on a boat and traveling globally, we’ve learned the value of making our own nut milks. It’s not only significantly more delicious but also proves cost-effective when compared to stocking up on numerous boxed varieties. When you’re sailing across remote islands, fresh milk is both scarce and expensive – opting for the shelf-stable alternatives doesn’t exactly satiate your palate or provide optimal nutrients. Powdered milk works fine, but it certainly can’t compare to fresh homemade cashew milk. Creating Cashew Milk Made Easy The beauty of making your own nut milk is its simplicity. Despite numerous recipes available online advising you to soak the nuts overnight for easier blending, I’ve found this step optional and largely unnecessary. A good blender does most of the work. Purchasing a high-speed blender might sound ideal, but don’t underestimate a $20 sports drink blender. It’ll get the job done just fine for homemade cashew milk – no need to splurge on fancy equipment! Our Preferred Blend of Nuts and Flavors Here on our vessel, we enjoy a variety of nut milks – cashew, walnut, almond – but today’s focus is solely on the delightful cashew milk. I prefer local ingredients wherever possible; for instance, here in the Philippines, we have an abundance of cashews, courtesy of our friend Rul from Palan Cashew Company. Perfecting Your Nut Milk Taste Optional additions like vanilla or a touch of natural sugars (such as muscovado sugar) can elevate your homemade cashew milk to new heights. However, be mindful that added sweeteners, whether they’re honey or maple syrup, are still forms of sugar. Crafting the Perfect Latte Onboard Armed with our freshly prepared cashew milk latte, let’s indulge in a little morning reprieve before diving into breakfast. Our day usually commences around 5:30 – 6:00 AM when we cast off from remote island anchorages. The Morning Culinary Finale To complete this delightful morning ritual, I’ll be sharing a recipe for oat cashew walnut banana muffins. These heart-warming treats provide an energizing boost that sets us up well for the day ahead. Delving into The Galley Tour and Beyond The tools and equipment we use on board include a dishwasher, oven, blender, and more. As our voyage progresses, I continue to adjust my cooking techniques to optimize baking times and evenness, ensuring maximum efficiency in limited galley space. Savor the Taste of Home-Ade Cashew Milk Enjoy your freshly prepared cashew milk latte with a side of our homemade walnut banana oat muffins, accompanied by locally sourced items like coconut jam and Pedro’s nut butter for an extra protein punch. Feel free to visit our website for the recipe details and additional links on related products we’ve used during our global journey. Join The Crew Thank you all for your continued support and interest in following us aboard Gone with the Wynns. A big shout-out to our Curiosity Crew members – don’t forget to leave comments below if you’d like a more in-depth guide on crafting the perfect cup of coffee or any other topic. If this episode has piqued your interest and you wish to join our crew, please visit our website for further information. Remember, we’re all about sharing these unique moments with each of you. Until Next Time! As we embark on the remaining parts of our journey across this vast ocean, I bid you all adieu. Stay tuned for next week’s episode as we continue documenting life at sea through both its trials and triumphs.
Join us for a relaxed morning in the galley as we go through our typical rituals and recipes. We talk about our favorite kitchen gear, share some thoughts on how our galley is set up and how our appliances are working out so far. #TeamDishwasher

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.

We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.

Things We're Most Curious About...

GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.

TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.

Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.

ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.

Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity
