Learning How to Sail (again)

Embark on an exhilarating marine adventure with the Gone with the Wynns, as they navigate through their first offshore sailing experience, marking a significant milestone in their incredible voyage across the Philippine waters. This episode is filled with surreal experiences and challenges that test not only their skill but also their resilience.

Sailing into Reality

Having spent two months living aboard their vessel, the couple now finds themselves preparing to set sail for their first offshore passage. With 700 plus nautical miles already logged during their sea trial and passage out of China with a full crew of sailors, they are now ready to face the open seas with just the two of them.

The Journey Begins

Ahead lies a series of adventures and challenges, including a stop at a beautiful, yet secluded reef in the middle of nowhere. The Gone with the Wynns crew embarks on this journey filled with anticipation, despite the initial reluctance.

The Quiet Power of Electric Motoring

A significant highlight of their journey is the quiet and calm experience of leaving an anchorage under electric power, appreciating how much quieter it is compared to traditional sailing. This serene experience not only enhances the sailing pleasure but also makes communication between crew members more effortless.

A Day Filled with Challenges and Fun

The Gone with the Wynns crew faces an unpredictable day with wind shifts, waves, and sail changes. Despite the challenges, they relish the excitement, finding joy in the learning curve and adapting to the new boat.

Conquering Fear and Excitement

Passing through challenging areas like Fairday Pass, known for its strong winds and big waves, the crew demonstrates their confidence in handling the boat despite initial nervousness. The Gone with the Wynns‘ solid performance instills a deep sense of trust in their vessel.

Exploring Apo Reef

The journey leads them to the stunning Apo Reef, a marine preserve offering crystal-clear waters, abundant coral life, and diverse marine species. The crew anchors in designated mooring balls, ensuring minimal impact on this pristine ecosystem.

The Next Adventure Awaits

With a heart full of butterflies, the couple savors their time in the paradise they’ve discovered. The Gone with the Wynns‘ journey continues to other destinations, promising even more thrilling experiences and breathtaking sights in the vast Philippine seas.

To experience more unforgettable marine adventures, follow Gone with the Wynns as they embark on their sailing odyssey across exotic destinations and hidden gems in the vast ocean.

We set sail for what we thought would be a leisurely 250 nm sail from Subic to the northern part of Palawan.  How naïve!  Mother nature had a full mix of wind and waves in store for us.  It felt like we were learning how to sail all over again.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.

We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.

Things We're Most Curious About:

GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.

TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.

Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.

ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.

Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity
