Inside The Philippines Most Dangerous Wild Food

The cashew business in the Philippines has become an unlikely success story, proving to be a lifeline for countless families in rural communities. It all began when local entrepreneur Raul Pedro discovered that there was no system in place to turn discarded fruit into something more valuable.

Community-Led Cashew Harvesting

The cashew trees found on Busuanga Island are wild and natural, growing without the need for watering or tending. All the locals have to do is gather the fruit that falls from the trees and deliver it to Raul’s processing facility. With no water needed, this is an environmentally-friendly way of sustaining income.

Traditional Cashew Processing

Traditionally, cashews have been processed by hand to remove the skin and expose the nut inside. However, this process often leaves the nuts contaminated due to contact with the shell’s toxic oil.

Raul’s Innovative Processing Facility

To avoid contamination and create a higher-quality product, Raul invested in state-of-the-art machinery for his processing facility. He started the project during the pandemic after realizing that tourism had significantly declined, leaving the local community struggling to make ends meet.

Sustainable and Profitable

Raul’s facility has helped quadruple the income of cashew gatherers. In return, locals have shown appreciation for a product that carries higher value than previously possible with cashews alone.

The Future of Cashew Business

Raul’s operation has grown significantly since it began, and the community has embraced this newfound opportunity to boost their income sustainably. By working together, they have successfully overcome many challenges and built a business that benefits everyone involved.

The Impact on Community

Raul’s passion for supporting the local community and providing an income-generating opportunity has changed the lives of many on Busuanga Island. His determination to overcome challenges through innovation and sustainability showcases how one man can make a real difference in rural communities.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.

We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.

Things We're Most Curious About...

GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.

TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.

Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.

ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.

Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity
