Discovering Palawan’s Hidden Gems with the Gone with the Wynns
The Gone with the Wynns family embarked on an epic sailing journey to Palawan, navigating through stunning waters and discovering hidden gems. The trip started with a challenging sail where they experienced winds of 17 knots and waves up to eight knots. The journey was not without its share of mishaps, as one of the family members suffered from an unknown rash that seemed to appear after their visit to Coron. However, this did not deter them from enjoying the beautiful scenery around them.
A Delightful Discovery
Upon arriving in El Nido, they picked up their friend Joshua, who was enthusiastic to explore the area. As they sailed towards their destination, they passed by a resort that turned out to be privately owned but allowed them access with permission. This fortunate turn of events led to a memorable lunch and relaxation on a sandy beach.A Memorable Market Run
With provisions for an extended journey, the family made a trip to the local market. They were mindful of selecting fresh produce that could withstand the time before they’d see another market. With a focus on local products, the Wynns found themselves enjoying more traditional Filipino cuisine. An Unforgettable Expedition
The highlight of their trip was the Ta Expedition, where they ventured out for a three-day sailing voyage around Coron’s islands. This adventure involved staying in various exclusive beaches and included a visit to a parrot farm which Joshua found particularly exciting.A Culinary Experience
Throughout their journey, the Gone with the Wynns were warmly received by local hosts who shared their culinary traditions. One such example was a delicious meal of roasted peanuts, served in a unique bamboo structure where they could watch the sunset over crystal-clear waters.A Journey Worth Taking
The family’s adventure through Palawan demonstrates that sometimes the best experiences come from embracing new challenges and taking the time to explore off-the-beaten-path locations. With memories of warm hospitality, stunning landscapes, and new friendships, the Gone with the Wynns have found another slice of paradise in their continued sailing journey around the world.Sailing through the Palawan province in the Philippines to a beautiful little spot called El Nido. You know the old saying, don’t count your chickens before they hatch? Well, I was reminded of this sentiment more than once this week. Because each time I made a proclamation about how “great or easy” things were…I was met with a swift stick or security guards. 🤦🏻♀️
Never a dull moment.
We’re sailing through the Palawan province here in the Philippines to a beautiful little spot called El Nido. We’re meeting up with an old friend and a few new ones. And misadventures aside, we find ourselves surrounded by stunning landscapes, unbelievably hospitable people and meals worthy of royalty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Things We're Most Curious About...
GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.
Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity
