Sailing SOUTH AFRICAN WILD COAST. Drifting Ep. 23

We sail the South African Wild Coast and something breaks at sea! The Transkei wild coast is notorious for being a treacherous stretch of coast along the Eastern Cape. Known to many sailors for its rugged terrain, violent storms, big seas and unforgiving coastline! Many a ship lays wrecked along its pristine beaches.

It has been an intense few days planning this 250 nautical mile passage from East London to Durban. We get all our safety equipment ready and check our paper charts, we do some last minute meal preparation and Moya calms our sailing cat, Midnight, down.

We enjoy a few hours of fantastic ocean sailing before the wind dies down and something breaks! Robin notices a shackle has broken off our main sail! Luckily he is like Macguiver and we make a plan with some dyneema rope and continue along the gorgeous Transkei coast. Dolphin and Cape Gannets go mad as a feeding frenzy erupts and a baby whale pops up to say hello.
Robin has hiked the Wild Coast from the casino to the Kei River and it is so lekka to be sailing it! We pass the famous Transkei Hole in the Wall and take in the natural beauty of the country. Charlotte gets seasick, but luckily only twice and back to feeling strong after a few hours rest! When we enter Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Natal Sharks Board meshing crew speed over to us for a chat. So cool!

About 80 miles from Durban we encounter problems with our alternator! Without enough power from our batteries we switch all our electronics off and hand steer the rest of the way to Durban just by eyesight! 55 hours after leaving East London we finally sail into Durban, our home port!

Thanks for watching!
Much love,
Captain Robin, Charlotte, sailor girl Moya and Midnight, our sailing cat!
