Indonesia Visa Extension: The Unconventional Car Park Cash Method
In the latest episode of our Dream Time in Indonesia series, we ventured beyond usual exploration to tackle the administrative necessities head on. We found ourselves at a fascinating crossroads when it came time to extend our visas – the classic Indonesian bureaucratic dance required an unconventional move that had us handing over cash in a car park.
The Prelude
After a great 10 days in Wakatobi we sailed Our Dreamtime west to Pasarwajo. Our priority task here was to get our Indonesian Visa extended for the next sixty days. To facilitate this joined forces with other cruisers and hired a car and driver to take over the mountain range to the city of Bau Bau on the western side of the island. Here we met with the Wonderful Sail 2 Indonesia Rally representative in a truly bizarre experience. Under a palm tree in a shopping centre carpark, we handed over ten million rupiah in thick wads of bank notes and our four Australian passports to a guy we’d never met, who’s address we didn’t know. With just his first name and WhatsApp number, we drove away wondering whether we’d ever see our passports again. Are We Crazy? To any onlooker it would have had to have the appearance of some sort of underworld drug deal but, in typical Indonesian style, it was simply how business was done and we had our passports back three days later complete with the all important visas.
After taking in the sites of Bau Bau, the wait provided us with the perfect opportunity for some motorcycle exploration around Pasarwajo with a great visit to a Bajo village built over the water and some deep cave swimming. We hope you enjoy the episode.
