Sailing Bali – The Island of the Gods – S4 Ep100
In this extraordinary episode, we set out to explore the stunning island of Bali as part of our Dreamtime Sail adventure in Indonesia. Join us as we navigate through remote waters, immerse ourselves in rich cultures, and take in breathtaking landscapes.<--->After some time spent exploring the wonders of Lombok, we took a wild fast ferry ride across the Lombok Strait to Bali. It’s safe to say that we were land-lovers for a while! The Barley HolidayThanks to great friends who very generously invited us, we had the pleasure of experiencing a week-long holiday on Bali. The boat was safely moored at Medana Bay Marina in Lombok while we indulged in this break from sailing life.Spectacular Snorkeling AdventureAfter a fantastic week on land, it was time to return to the boat for the journey back to Bali. We made our way from Lombok to Bali just in time for an incredible welcome at Lavina Beach on the North Coast. To top off this episode, we were treated to a truly spectacular snorkeling adventure. The Beauty of BaliBali is one of Australia’s near neighbors yet parts of it can feel as remote as anywhere on Earth. This archipelago nation boasts over 17,000 islands and is a melting pot of 1,300 distinct ethnic groups and cultures.Transportation in Far-Flung PlacesWhile transportation methods may be limited in some far-flung parts of this diverse country, we had our trusty Dreamtime Sail boat as our means of travel. Our floating home served us well as we ventured on an adventure of a lifetime. The High-Speed Ferry RideOur journey to meet up with friends on Bali started at Medana Bay Marina in Lombok. We caught a high-speed ferry, packed with young travelers heading back after a wild old time on G wangan. The beer was flowing and the music was loud – we had the perfect perch sitting atop the boat’s air conditioning unit! The Wild High-Speed Ferry RideAs if a packed ferry with energetic young travelers wasn’t exciting enough, our crew soon realized the boat was horribly overloaded. The crew seemed to be too busy joining in on the party to worry about that. Even the skipper was necking beers while helming across one of Asia’s busiest shipping lanes. We survived the wild fast ferry ride okay but some only just! The Coffee of the CatWhen we weren’t exploring more of mystical Bali with our great friends, we were up for a truly unique experience – the coffee of the cat! This unusual brew comes from a creature you’d least expect – the forest walking cat. These little felines eat the coffee beans, distribute their feces after processing them, which are then collected to create this special concoction.Sampling Ginger Coffee & Luwak CoffeeWe visited a tasting selection of all sorts of different coffees and teas. Some of these interesting varieties included Ginger coffee. Our crew had plenty of experiences in Australia, but nothing quite like this one! We tasted the notorious Luwac coffee – also known as crap coffee because of where it originated from. The Luxurious Break on BaliA week’s holiday with our friends in luxury was not to be underestimated. We explored more of the island, enjoyed a beautiful setting within the Rice Terraces, and even waited for the big one – the Luwac coffee! While sipping on some unusual brews, we reveled in this much-needed break from boat life. The Sail Back to BaliWe returned to our sailing home with a renewed sense of excitement. Setting off from Lombok, we sailed back to the stunning shores of Lavina in Bali. After an amazing welcome, it was time to make new memories on the waters. The Spectacular Snorkeling AdventureAs if all the adventures up until now were not enough, we took part in a spectacular snorkeling adventure in Mangen National Park. The water clarity was amazing and the sea life even better than we could have ever imagined. Our snorkeling expedition certainly lived up to expectations!Ready for More Adventures? Happy sailing!Bali may be a little more crowded with tourists than most of the Indonesian destinations we sail our 42 year old ketch to, but the “Island of the Gods” unbelievable natural beauty, amazing culture and warm hearted locals far outweigh having a few more people around. In fact, in this episode we go there twice. First on a wild high speed ferry trip from Lombok to spend a week based at the luxurious “The Lovina” resort as guests of great friends from Australia exploring Bali highlights, kicking back and catching up.
Then we zoom back to Medana Bay Marina and sail Our Dreamtime over to Bali just in time for a stunning welcome event for the “Wonderful Sail 2 Indonesia Rally” participants featuring traditional Balinese music and dancing, incredible local food and a great night of top quality entertainment.
We cap things of with a snorkelling trip to the stunning Menjangan National Park for a magical underwater experience snorkelling the reefs and swimming with turtles.
