Dodging Whales on a Rough 200 Mile Overnight Sail to Indonesia’s World Famous Wakatobi S4-Ep91

We tried to pick a nice weather window for a relaxed sail from Pulau Buru to Wangi Wangi, the northern most of the Wakatobi Islands but the South East trade winds decided to blow stronger and longer giving us a very bumpy overnight passage. We unexpectedly encountered whales, including a massive one longer than the boat that passed by quite close. As he headed for us, we weren’t sure whether to be thrilled or petrified.

We joined a number of the Sail to Indonesia Rally fleet and enjoyed the luxury of being tied to a marina style dock for a 10 day stay in the harbour at Wanci. Here we had a great time socialising, exploring the island including the historic Liyah Toga Fort, and experiencing much of the fascinating culture of this unique area. In particular, Karen loved the traditional hand weaving, traditional dance and amazing Kabuenga courtship festival on the neighbouring Kambode Island.
