After Sailing to Indonesia's Stunning Satonda Volcano, We Swim in the Crater of Course - S4 Ep 97
June 21, 2024 by Dreamtimesail | Language: EN Play Time: 00:23:32 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

Welcome aboard Dreamtime Sail for our latest adventure sailing to Satonda Volcano in Indonesia, after an incredible experience in Komodo National Park. As we set sail from Labuan Bajo, heading west towards the unique island of Palo Satonda off Sumba, let’s recap some of our amazing experiences and adventures so far.
The Wondrous Komodo National Park
Our time in the world-class tourism destination of Komodo, with its famous Komodo dragons, stunning coral gardens, and marine life including the majestic Manta Ray and turtles, was truly incredible. Prices are higher here compared to other parts of Indonesia, but the experience is undoubtedly worth it.
Next Stop: Palo Satonda
Ahead, we’re excited about our new destination – Palo Santang, an island located just outside of the Komodo National Park. With its stunning views and promising snorkeling opportunities soon to be part of the national park, this place holds great promise for our adventure.
Encountering the Mighty Kondo Currents
Sailing through the powerful currents of Komodo is always a thrilling experience. The Pacific and Indian oceans’ collision here creates strong, unpredictable currents that can sometimes slow our journey to a stop. Without local knowledge, navigating these waters can be challenging but always exciting.
Arriving at Banta Island
Following our successful sail, we anchored in the beautiful and protected bay of Banta Island. Not only does it offer great snorkeling, but it’s also a short sailing distance to another must-visit spot – Satonda Volcano.
Swimming Inside a Volcano
Embarking on the extraordinary adventure of swimming inside a volcano crater is an experience unlike any other. The water in Satonda’s lake-like filled crater is remarkably salty, offering incredible buoyancy. The surrounding reef is lush with abundant marine life and conservation efforts.
Local Knowledge Proves Vital
As with any adventure, local knowledge plays a vital role. In this case, the ranger’s prediction of the wind changing direction back to the northeast proved crucial, allowing us to revisit Satonda and enjoy its natural wonders further.
The Power of Wind
During our sail from Banta to Satonda, the unexpected local wind gusts at 125 knots tested our resolve and made us reconsider. However, upon advice from the ranger, we decided to wait it out and ultimately were rewarded with a beautiful afternoon exploring the island.
Continuing Our Southeast Asian Adventure
After enjoying our time at Satonda Volcano, we continued our southeast Asian adventure. Next up is a stop at the southwest corner of Lombok, where Dreamtime will stay in Marina Del Rey for about 10 days. We then plan to catch a ferry across to Bali and enjoy a week’s break with friends before resuming our travels.
Summing It Up
Sailing to Satonda Volcano, Indonesia, is an adventure not to be missed. This remote and natural wonder, surrounded by crystal-clear waters, incredible marine life, and local hospitality, offers an unforgettable experience that only a boat like Dreamtime Sail can provide.

The waters of the Komodo Islands are renowned for very strong currents as the Pacific and Indian Oceans collide with their waters raging through the area’s many intra-island channels. After leaving Labuanbajo, we joined the long, long list of sailors to fall foul of these as first we fought our way to reach our anchorage at the island of Banta, then struggled to leave it. Fortunately Our Dreamtime overcame the elements and we reached a calm anchorage on the north coast of Sumbawa in the shadow of one of Indonesia’s biggest volcanos.
From here we enjoyed a pleasant sail to the absolutely stunning volcanic island of Pulau Satonda. We never imagined ourselves swimming in a volcano but that’s what we did.
