Race to Save a Catamaran from Drifting Onto the Reef in Indonesia – S4-Ep94
In this pulse-pounding episode of Dreamtime Sail, we find ourselves on an incredible adventure amidst the stunning Indonesian islands. Join us as we recount our harrowing journey to save a dear friend’s catamaran from drifting onto a perilous reef near Pulau Bonerate. The Unexpected Drift After enjoying an unforgettable stay at Pasoa, we continued our journey towards the mesmerizing island of Pulau Bonerate. Our intention was to explore its renowned traditional boat-building craftsmanship and immerse ourselves in the authentic village life. However, our return to the dock revealed a serious predicament. Our friend Simon, off on an adventurous motorcycle tour with his wife Robin, had anchored their beautiful catamaran named ‘Rahana’ near ours. But upon returning, we spotted our vessel but couldn’t see Rahana anywhere – only a tiny speck in the distance. It was clear that ‘Rahana’ had broken free from its mooring and was adrift. The Race to Save ‘Rahana’ Knowing full well the dire situation, we immediately launched our dinghy with Karen at the helm, heading off towards Rahana with haste. The fear of discovering damage upon reaching the drifting catamaran was very real. A Dramatic Rescue Mission Upon arrival, we discovered Rahana surprisingly close to the fringing reef, thankfully still floating in deep water. Our relief was short-lived as we found that the circuit breaker on their windlass had tripped due to the drag, preventing them from bringing up their anchor. Yet amidst our anxiety, fortune shone upon us; Rahana’s anchor lay suspended in mid-water instead of being snagged on the reef. It appeared that she had been held steady by opposing wind and current. Once these forces reversed, Rahana could have ended up aground on the reef. A scary thought indeed! The Village Life and Boat Building of Pulau Bonerate Even with this terrifying experience behind us, we still managed to revel in the beauty of Pulau Bonerate. Here, traditional boat-building techniques using a mix of modern power tools and age-old craftsmanship were vividly demonstrated by skilled artisans. This remote island held much charm beyond the immediate excitement. Concluding Thoughts As we reflect on our nail-biting ordeal, it’s hard not to be struck by the sheer unpredictability of life on the water. Yet such incidents remind us to treasure every moment and always stay prepared for anything. They are also a poignant reminder of the importance of community, as friends and neighbors unite in times of crisis. While we managed to escape disaster that day, we will forever remember this adventure on Pulau Bonerate as one fraught with challenges – but ultimately full of valuable life lessons. Such is the magic of sailing in remote Indonesian waters! This episode of our “Dreamtime in Indonesia” sailing series starts sedately enough as we sail from Pasawajo to anchor in the massive reef lagoon of Taka Lambongan before things start to amp up when we struggle to find somewhere to anchor at our next stop at Pulau Jinatung. Then it’s on to Pulau Bonerate to see the traditional timber boat building but things get far more dramatic when our friend’s boat drags anchor and disappears while he's off on a tour of the island. In his absence, it’s then a race for us to reach and prevent his beautiful catamaran from being wrecked on the waiting reef.
