Newbie Sails Into A Storm With Family Aboard
July 09, 2024 by David Shih | Language: EN Play Time: 00:22:50 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

The Stormy Journey Begins
Just when they thought everything was perfect, with the family finally on board after months of repairs, the first passage proves to be a real challenge. They lose the autopilot, misjudge the weather, and sail into a storm far worse than anticipated. What’s supposed to be a moment of triumph turns into an ordeal they could never have predicted. The Family On Board
But what stands out the most is that despite the trials and tribulations, they are sailing with their family. A decision made after months of boatyard work.Having only recently splashed back into water, David and his family decide to buddy boat with another sailboat to get from Panama to Texas. They had done a short sea trial to check that all repairs held up and David got crash course on sailing basics but the bigger problem is they can’t afford to pay for professional sailors so he steps up and takes on the challenge along with his wife Mary and two of their four kids. The Ordeal at Sea
The ordeal is far from over as they face several more failures:* They lose both engines with one of them stuck in gear, and a later attempt to start it leads to the engine getting lodged even tighter. * Their autopilot goes haywire making it difficult to hold course. * A lack of communication equipment leads to misunderstandings as they try to communicate with the other boat. The Harrowing Night
The worst is yet to come, though, as David and Jamie manage to get both engines running but sailing at night without radar or AIS proves harrowing. The family narrowly escapes crashing into the boat in front.Adding to this chaos, a squall comes through roughening the seas further, their water supply runs out and they struggle to drop the main sail under storm conditions. But with determination and teamwork, the worst was finally over when they managed to get both engines up and running again.Making It To BCUS Deloro
Finally, after much difficulty and many setbacks, including navigating at night without adequate equipment or experience, David and his family make it to their destination, Bcus Deloro. This journey tested not only their skills and knowledge but also their patience, persistence, and resilience. The storm that initially seemed like a disastrous beginning turned out to be an unexpected challenge, an intense course on sea survival. It was during this journey that David learned the importance of experience and planning – and never coming into anchorages at night without proper visibility!Making the Best Out of a Rough Ride
Through all their troubles, there were some highlights. The homemade pancakes they enjoyed, a couple of refreshing energy drinks shared between them. And even dolphins escorted them into the evening. But more than these material things or creatures, it was their family bonds that pulled through. As David admits in the video, had he not brought his buddy Jamie along, there’s no telling how things could have turned out for him and his family on that stormy night. The shared ordeal, the need to rely on each other and improvise under pressure forged an unbreakable bond.Final Thoughts
In conclusion, David’s tale of sailing into a storm with his family aboard serves as both a cautionary tale and a testament to human resilience. No matter the odds stacked against you, determination and team spirit can indeed turn things around. As for their new life on board, it promises to be an adventure filled with endless learning opportunities – some technical like fixing the autopilot or sailing in a storm; others more profound like family bonding during adversity. Follow David’s journey to see what’s next on their voyage towards living their dream of full-time cruising! What To Take Away

Don't do what we did. We left for our 1st passage thinking it was going to be easy sailing. But, everything that could have gone wrong did. If we didn't have a super experienced friend aboard I don't know what would have happened. Sailing is amazing, but it get scary fast. Thanks to Jamie and @ParlayRevival for buddy boating with us.
