Transatlantic Sailing Passage #4. Hard to Live and Sleep on a Moving Sailboat? Ep107

Ep107 – In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our Transatlantic Sailing Passage series. I am taking you along with me in this VLOG style episode. I will show you what it was like to live, and more importantly try to sleep, on a sailboat that never stops sailing, motoring, moving and making noises. We start doing our watches where we have to be On Duty at the helm for 4 hrs at a time covering the 24 hr day. In between those watches we have to do all our cooking, cleaning, eating and sleeping. None of that was too difficult except (for me) the sleeping.
Some people who are not borderline insomniacs and who are not light sleepers, who are woken by the slightest noise, may not run into the trouble I did. With the non stop motion and unknown noises coming from a sailboat under sail, I found it really hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. Because of that, for the first few days I felt like I was a walking zombie. Always tired but never quite able to fall into a deep prolonged sleep.
This episode cover this first “getting use to the boat” period. The good news is, with time even I, once tired enough, could shut down and fall asleep for short Naps. Add enough naps together and YOU CAN ACTUALLY FUNCTION.
