Sailing through a storm to Waupoos. Almost blew out our sails. Lessons Learned. Ep77

Ep77. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we sail to Waupoos and look forward to using our new folding bikes to bike through wine country. It seemed like a beautiful day for sailing. 12 knots of wind, right on the beam. Perfect, until a storm that looked to be passing behind us, brought our winds up to 35 knots which was not forecast and was way more than we could handle with full sails up. It almost knocked our boat right over and blew out one of our sails. It was a very tense time as our sailboat was so overpowered that we lost the ability to steer it and were veering toward land, until we released the Genoa sheet. With the headsail luffing, we regained control but not before having what felt like a minor heart attack. LOL
We learned a valuable lesson in this episode. If you see dark clouds in the area (even if it looks like the storm will miss you), reef in some sails just in case the rain clouds are packing one hell of a wallop of wind as well.
