Ep134. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we take our Sailboat 5 hours down the St Lawrence River to Alexandria Bay. We meet with a local businessman who, through quick actions, saved the town from being decimated by last years flooding.
Alexandria Bay depends on having boaters come as tourists to see Boldt Castle on Heart Island and then return to the town to eat and drink and possibly get a hotel room. Last year the town’s docks were completely under water and the town would have suffered badly had it now been for the actions of a few businessmen.
Ron Tomson and a group of other businessmen heard of an auction going on in Canada for 300’ of floating dock and without checking if the town would pay for them back, they went ahead and bought them. Without their quick decision to buy them the town the auction would have closed and having no docks would have decimated the towns tourism, which is the lifeblood of the town’s economy. We saw how other towns in the area last year looked like flooded Ghost towns. Alexandria Bay did not suffer that fate.
We will give you a walking tour of the town (with my new Crane 2 gimbal making it silky smooth. 🙂 ) and then we take one of Uncle Sam Tour Boats over to Boldt Castle to check out “Kids Day” quickly.

Cruising Off Duty
Welcome to Cruising Off Duty. We are Craig and Janice. We love travelling and we love sailing, so we figure the best way to see the world is by sailboat. We presently have a 35' Beneteau Oceanis sloop that we sail out of Kingston, Ontario Canada, which is on Lake Ontario. We have a longer term plan, when we retire in a few years, to sell everything and buy a 40-50' Catamaran and circumnavigate the globe. Craig loves photography along with land based and drone videography and plans to document everything along our travels to share with the world through Youtube and other social media. For now, follow our channel as we show you the beauty of the Great Lakes and the 1000 Islands area of the St Lawrence River. You will also see the steps we take as start narrowing down the Catamaran we think will suit us best as we move closer to our goal of living full time on a sailboat and exploring the world. It should be a journey worth watching.
