In this exciting episode, we join Captain Rick Moore as he unveils his latest invention—a secret weapon for cruising that’s bound to change the game on the water. Meet the innovative solar sun shade, a project years in the making that showcases the Captain’s remarkable craftsmanship and dedication to improving boating experiences.
The journey begins with cutting Sunbrella fabric into precise shapes, aiming for perfection every step of the way. With a focus on the bow of the boat, Captain Moore explains the need for a custom-fit sun shade to cover the cockpit, providing essential shade during the hot days of cruising.
Understanding the importance of power generation while at anchor, he incorporates four Bouar V 200W solar panels into the design. These flexible panels not only provide ample shade but also harness additional energy from the sun, making it a double-edge weapon on any cruising adventure.
To ensure optimal efficiency and functionality, the captain includes an ingenious feature: using the sun shade’s natural position to collect rainwater. A drainage hole in the center allows for collecting 150 square feet of rainwater directly into the water tanks—a testament to the innovative thought put into every detail.
The assembly process is not just about work; it’s a collaborative effort involving friends, family, and even local children who come together to help mount the sun shade. This highlights how community involvement plays a crucial role in these boating adventures.
Narana Island becomes a hub for gathering insights and learning from each other, reinforcing themes of communal support and unity.
The real test comes when the solar sun shade is deployed for the first time, with four B RV Sig solar panels connected in a sophisticated wiring configuration that promises up to 800 watts of power. The result? An impressive output of 97 Watts within minutes.
As Captain Rick Moore continues his journey, this innovative sun shade remains an emblem of the possibilities when ingenuity meets perseverance on the high seas. With a focus on sustainability, functionality, and community, he demonstrates how such simple yet impactful inventions can change lives at sea.
The creation of this solar sun shade reflects more than just a desire for shade or power. It embodies the spirit of adventure, creativity, and a deep connection with both the natural world and the community of fellow sailors and explorers. This episode is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates not only innovation but also the shared joys of exploration and camaraderie that sailing brings.
Today we are sailing in the stunning San Blas Islands of Panama. Our last days with current crew onboard brings us to the island of Nargana.. the only island where the Kuna Indians that don't want to live the conventional lifestyle in palm frond huts on the beach can live with modern conveniences of electricity, music, sports, refrigeration, etc.. and while we are on this island we start to build my new secret weapon for cruising.. an 800w solar powered sunshade for our foredeck, that will also double as a full rain catchment system while we are at anchor.. a real GAME CHANGER for sure!
These new CIGS flexible solar panels from BougeRV are becoming my favorites of most gear onboard, because they even collect more power in shade conditions of dawn and dusk than any other panel on the boat! Weighing in at only 7lbs per panel, the entire sunshade comes it at slightly over 30lbs, and rolls up into a small enough roll to easily store inside our sail locker with all our other gear.
For more information on the panels, go to http://www.BougeRV.com and find the CIGS 200w flexible solar panel to see exactly what we've got, and why I like it so much.. enjoy!
Cheers,
Captain Rick & Crew
