SAN BLAS Panama — The Reefs That Sink Boats Here | SSL779
The San Blas Islands are one of the most beautiful places we have ever sailed. They are also one of the most technically demanding. Over 100 kilometres of coral reef protects this archipelago — and that same reef has ended a lot of sailing dreams.
After 28 hours of open Caribbean, we arrived in Guna Yala. This video is two things: how you actually get a 6-foot-draft boat safely inside a reef system where your chart plotter can be out by 50 metres, and the story of the people who live here — a culture that outlasted the Spanish, took on the Panamanian state in 1925, and won.
We came in on high sun with the autopilot off, Maddy on the bow reading the water, and proven waypoints from cruisers who had been here before us. That is not being over-cautious. That is just how it is done here.
We also talk about Firefly — experienced cruisers, nine years on the water, lost on the reef at El Porvenir after entering at dusk. Nobody was hurt. The boat was gone.
Then there are the coconuts, the molas, and the children of the moon.
