Palmerston Island was founded by William Marsters, who settled here in the 19th century and built a unique community. His descendants still live on the island today.

Who was James Cook?
Palmerston Island was discovered by James Cook on June 16, 1774, during his second voyage in the Pacific aboard the HMS Resolution. He was the first to chart the island, naming it after Henry Temple, the 2nd Viscount Palmerston, who was a Lord of the Admiralty at the time.
