It’s not the first time we’ve been here and we know its a danger but this time there was no way to avoid it. We’ve just sailed over 2,000 miles from Panama and are almost to the hurricane safe zone in Mexico when we get sick and can’t move Calico Skies for a month. So we’re under a lot of pressure to make miles north as soon as possible and set out on a 500 mile passage headed for the Sea of Cortez. But the weather is not ideal with thunderstorms looming in the distance . . .
We are stuck between a rock and a hard place and when the clouds move away we set out, hoping for the best. Our buddy boat sv OneLife is with us and they pull ahead as we raise our sails. Suddenly a call comes over the radio: They have lost all power. Lightening is in the near distance but we didn’t see a bolt. It’s hard to tell what is going on but we see this as a close call and it’s a reminder that the ‘weather threat’ is very, very real.
