Preparing to cruise off the grid for three months begins with a massive stock up of provisions. After taking an inventory we head into to hot Bocas Town via panga boat. Every store carries different items and are spaced out so it’s many hours of strategic shopping with a heavy load on our backs.
Once back at Red Frog marina on Bastimentos island, we prepare for departure by completing a couple of projects on board. We expect navigation to be challenging in the San Blas islands where we’re headed so first we try to figure out a workaround for our malfunctioning depth sounder. It turns out the wine glass filled with water against the hull inside the boat is able to transmit the sonar beam!
Next we install dinghy wheels because there will be many beach landings and few dinghy docks in San Blas. Meanwhile, we’ve figured out how to get even more provisions delivered – the heavy stuff like booze and milk – which is a huge win for us.
Lastly Bill cleans the bottom for the first time in six months, a huge job since Calico Skies has a complete ecosystem below. And then we say goodbye to magical Red Frog with a final, beautiful encounter with an adorable sloth.
