Dry Tortugas, Isolated Gem of the Florida Keys (Calico Skies Sailing Ep 95)

It’s time to escape the hustle and bustle of Miami and get back into what we regard as “real cruising” or sailing the boat to remote, less main stream locations. In this episode we complete an overnight sail from Key Biscayne to the Dry Tortugas. It was cool to watch the majestic Fort Jefferson rise out of the ocean as we approached our destination. The Dry Tortugas is located about seventy miles west of Key West.
We drop the hook at about eight in the morning and immediately get down to the business of exploring the Fort. The Fort was quite the feat of engineering back in its hay-day with more that sixteen million brick transported to the island to construct it. We complete and educational tour before heading back to Calico Skies.
Another criteria our favorite cruising grounds meet is a nice to beach to chill at in the evenings with friends. The Dry Tortugas does not disappoint with a beautiful white sandy beach, facing west to watch the sun set. The only way to access the island is by ferry, sea plane or private boat. Fortunately for us all the tourists are gone by 3pm and we have the place to ourselves!
