9,500 miles into our 10,500-mile journey… this was the stretch 90% of people told us not to sail.
Bab el-Mandeb — pirate waters between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
It starts at night. Ships with AIS turned off. Shadows on the horizon.
Then our starboard engine stops cooling.
No raw water.
No cooling.
Overheat it here… and we lose it for good.
Hours in the engine room. Heat. Sweat. Exhaustion.
Finally — water flows again.
That night, the GPS flips to Indian Ocean.
We made it through.
But we’re still not cleared into Djibouti… and over 1,000 miles of high-risk water still lie ahead.

Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat is a story. It starts with reckless abandon, throwing all caution to the wind. Just bloody go for it and see what happens. It's not pretty but it sure is exciting. We wanted to live an alternative way of life, no more 9 to 5, no more playing by the rules. This is adventure, sailing with no previous experience, fixing a sailboat with no skills and sailing the world with little money. Living as if there really were no tomorrow. Feeling freedom in the mind and body. Look how we want, talk how we want and live how we want. Everything has a price. Love became a beautiful part of this story but it ended in heartbreak. Now only I (Joel) remain. These are the Tales of BOAB!
