In this episode, we join Joel and his sailboat Shakima for an honest discussion about their current situation and the future of their sailing adventure. As they prepare for a potential Atlantic Crossing to Dubai, the crew faces some hard truths and big decisions.
The crew discusses the state of their sailboat, Shakima, recognizing that she needs upgrades and attention. Joel admits to having given everything he has to keep her going but acknowledges there is still a long list of things needed for safe cruising.
The big adventure on the horizon for Joel and Shakima is an epic 9,700-mile journey from Grenada to Dubai across the Atlantic Ocean. Joel plans to learn a lot from experienced Captain Tony during this delivery trip and improve his sailing skills tremendously.
While the crew of Bums on a Boat initially considered continuing their journey solo, Joel reflects on his previous short trip to Kuru and recognizes there are certain things he will need if sailing alone in the future.
Joel’s plan now is to save up money, find sponsors and make improvements to Shakima before taking on their next big voyage. He intends to rely on friends’ help in both Grenada and the United States while preparing for the journey.
After making preparations, Joel eventually decides to leave Shakima behind in Secret Harbor for a period while he undertakes his Atlantic Crossing journey with experienced Captain Tony. With friends and neighbours taking care of Shakima during her time onshore, the Bums on a Boat crew are confident in their decision.
The episode ends with Joel vowing to give the Atlantic Crossing his all and thanking his supporters. With a focus on saving money, acquiring sponsors, and returning as better sailors, the future of ‘Bums on a Boat’ is looking brighter than ever.
I assess the situation and share the reality of boat life here on my sailboat, Chak Matay. Where we are at and what the future holds.
