Part 3 EPIRB incident, How to pee, Boat and crew performance

In this final part of our dockside chat we discuss the boat and crew how they performed, the EPIRB incident and what it’s really like on passage.
Just before leaving our satellite phone arrived. This would allow us to send Ocean Data on a daily basis and with a subscription to Predict wind receive weather forecasting. We have given Predict Wind a bit of a bashing as the forecasting we received was appalling. 10 – 15 knots predicted and 35+ knots sustained is what we actually had. It seems we were not using the best weather model for this area and had we used one of the other models we may have received more accurate forecasting. Being new to this service and with little time I sought the advice of an experienced offshore sailor who possibly pointed us in the wrong direction. There are 2 lessons here. Fist get your kit early and practice with it, something we didn’t do. Secondly It would be nice if when using the Offshore App in Predict Wind a caveat popped up if the model your using isn’t the best for the area your in.
In conclusion, we were uncomfortable but not in danger, and there’s a difference. When your offshore you need to be prepared for whatever weather arrives as outrunning it is not an option. Had we felt it necessary we would have simply hove to and waited for it to pass. This is another benefit of keeping well offshore.
